Schizophrenia is a mental illness which affects the normal thinking. It is a disorder of brain which causes significant distress and morbidity in the affected individuals. It has been depicted in various movies including “the beautiful mind” depicting real life story of Professor John Nash. It is a general perception amongst people that schizophrenia is untreatable which is incorrect. Yes schizophrenia is treatable and around 80% people lead a normal healthy life with treatment. But this perception leads to significant stigma amongst general people which makes affected people and their families hide their illness and not seek help because of the fear of being stigmatized by people. To overcome this stigma, increase awareness and encourage people to seek help, every year on 24th May World Health Organisation (WHO) celebrates “world schizophrenia day”. 20th – 27th may is celebrated as schizophrenia awareness week. Anand Neuropsychiatry Clinic urges you to spread awareness about schizophrenia and encourage people suffering to come out and seek help. Mental illnesses are real and are treatable. Let’s join our hands to spread this message.
